Developer productivity morning routine
Developer Productivity Begins at the Start of the Day: Inside My Morning Routine
As a software engineer, my days are filled with solving complex problems, making countless decisions, and maintaining deep focus for long stretches. One thing I’ve learned from spending so much time "in my head":
The quality of my thinking is directly linked to my physical and mental state.
Through experimentation, I've discovered a morning routine that helps me optimize my physical state to support clearer thinking, sharper focus, and better productivity. Your ideal routine might look completely different—and that’s great. Here’s what works well for me:
1. Hydration First:
I start my day with a large glass of water. Numerous studies confirm even mild dehydration negatively impacts cognitive performance and decision-making.
2. Intentional Breathing (Wim Hof Method):
While preparing green tea, I spend 10 minutes doing deep breathing exercises. This form of active meditation quiets my mind, reduces stress, and brings clarity.
3. Intense Physical Activation:
I head outside for a brief yet intensive session:
- Short breathing exercises at a faster pace to boost oxygen levels.
- Push-ups (60–70 reps) for strength and resilience.
- Stretching, finishing with a 5-minute plank to cultivate discipline and core stability.
- A 20-minute run at high intensity to activate heart and lung functions.
Exercise is scientifically proven to enhance cognitive function, reduce anxiety, and prime the brain for optimal performance.
4. Cold Shower for Mental Resilience:
Ending with a cold shower, known to enhance circulation and elevate mood. Afterwards, a deep calm settles over me, perfectly preparing me for focused work.
But remember: this is just what works for me.
Every person is different, and what energizes me might not energize you.
The goal isn't to copy my routine exactly. Instead, it's about understanding your own body and mind, experimenting, and discovering:
- What truly gives you energy?
- What enhances your mental clarity and creativity?
- What makes you feel balanced, healthy, and focused?
There’s plenty of strong scientific evidence backing up hydration, breathing exercises, physical activity, and cold exposure as powerful tools to enhance cognitive function and overall well-being.
I invite you to think critically:
- Have you found a morning routine that significantly improves your productivity?
- Is there one habit you’ve been curious to try but haven’t yet?
I'd love to hear what works for you!
